Brass beds and cast iron beds first appeared in Britain in the early 19th century, but it wasn’t until the mass production of the Victorian era that they became popular. Metal bedsteads were seen as more hygienic than traditional wooden beds and became favoured in schools and hospitals around the 1850s. From the 1850s onwards, brass and cast iron beds were manufactured in large numbers in factories in the West Midlands, mainly Birmingham and by the end of the 19th century they could be found in many homes, not just in Britain but around the world (a large number were exported).
Beds ranged from the very simple and elegant to the opulent and exquisite, decorated with floral designs and gilt curves and scrolls with pearl inlays. The finest beds were seen as status symbols of the wealthy and were made by the best makers such as RW Winfield & Co of Birmingham who were regarded as one of the best makers of the period. At Karma Beds we offer a variety of antique Victorian brass beds and cast iron beds for sale online.
